The Directors


Amy Taravella is the artistic director of the ALT THEATRE and co-director, choreographer, teacher and founder of Buffalo Contemporary Dance.  She is also a soloist with Sokolow Now!, the Anna Sokolow Archive Company under the direction of Lorry May.  Ms. Taravella has performed a full spectrum of contemporary dance works throughout the last fifteen years.  She has danced and produced work at Jacob's Pillow and Boston, MA; Florence and Castilioncello, Italy; New York City, Rochester, Brockport, Saratoga Springs, Chautauqua and Buffalo, NY;   Tallahassee, Jacksonville, and Orlando, FL;  Philadelphia and Slippery Rock, PA;  Virginia Beach, VA;  Hartford, CT and Nashville, TN.  Currently, Ms. Taravella is one of four co-producers of an international collaboration to create a remotely connected four-city production of Gerry Trentham’s The Four Mad Humours.  She has taught modern dance and ballet at SUNY College at Brockport, the University at Buffalo, Florida State University and the Buffalo Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts.  Ms. Taravella holds an Master of Fine Arts degree in Dance from Florida State University.

 

Leslie Wexler is co-director and choreographer for Buffalo Contemporary Dance. She has been a faculty member of the dance departments of SUNY Brockport and Buffalo, and the Buffalo Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, the latter for twenty- two years.  In 2006 she was recognized by the New York State Dance Educational Association, SUNY Brockport Regional National Dance Education Organization for Meritorious Service in Dance Education for Children.  Ms. Wexler has been invited to mount works on the student companies of SUNY Brockport, Geneseo, Fredonia, Kent State and the University of Buffalo.  Her work for UB was chosen to close the gala concert of the American College Dance Festival, Northeast division in 2003.  That same year, she was selected to present choreography at the Elan Awards, sponsored by DanceSpirit Magazine in New York City.  Ms. Wexler has been a faculty member and choreographer for the New York State Summer School of the Arts under the direction of Carolyn Adams, formerly a principal dancer with the Paul Taylor Dance Company.  Ms. Wexler has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Dance from the University of Michigan and a BS in Dance from SUNY Brockport.
